The next generation of dance makers joins forces with the iconic works of The San Diego Museum of Art.
San Diego Ballet dancers take center stage to create, perform and produce a program showcasing original choreography by company dancers inspired by the Museum’s Forging a Legacy exhibition. The unique production celebrates the creative voices within San Diego Ballet while continuing the company’s exploration of the powerful connections between visual art and dance.
Director’s Notes:
When The Director is away, the dancers come out to play. Or at least I hope they do. Sometimes a dancer is just a dancer. That is a wonderful thing. But sometimes a dancer has some thing that they want to say with their dance. Something personal. Something beyond doing the steps that someone else gives them. I know this is true for me. I started choreographing the moment I came home after my first dance class. I took the three steps I learned, repeated them over and over, did them left and right, turned them inside out, stuck them together to create new steps, and at a three minute dance by the time I was done. And that was just the first day.. It has always been important to me to create a platform for those dancers in the company, who have the same fever, to be able to explore that in a supportive space. The Collage program this year is exactly that. A chance for the dancers in the company to work with each other to choreograph and produce the show all on their own.. well, maybe with a bit of guidance from above or support from below. I always look forward to what they come up with, seeing the fruits of their efforts, and having them share that with our patrons and supporters. I look forward to seeing you there to support our next generation of artists. – Javier Velasco
