FAQ

Are you accepting submissions for dancers for the current season?

No. SDB is currently fully staffed.

Are you accepting submissions for future seasons?

Yes. SDB accepts submissions for future employment throughout the year. Decisions for future seasons are made in the late spring/early summer of each year. Our seasons generally begin in September/October.

Can I come and take a class as an audition?

Yes and no. Depending on the company’s workload, often a dancer may be able to take a company class or an upper division class as a prelude to being hired. However, this would not preclude that dancer from still having to go through the regular submission process (see below), as the artistic director is not going to be present during that class.

I am a designer/costumer/composer. Can you give me a job?

SDB is not currently seeking artists in these fields. However, you may submit your resumes and we will keep them on file.

I hear that San Diego is expensive. Do you provide housing?

Living in San Diego can be expensive. We have beautiful weather and it is a lovely, vibrant community to live in. SDB does NOT provide housing.

I know you only requested “X”, but I really want to show you” Y.” Can I go ahead and send that instead?

You may submit whatever you wish to submit, but please remember it is part of your audition for the company. If we get a submission that does not follow our guidelines, we think one of the following things.
  1. The applicant didn’t bother to read the clearly stated guidelines. So what kind of employee will they be?
  2. The applicant did read the clearly stated guidelines, but doesn’t think they apply to them. So what kind of employee will they be?
  3. The applicant is just sending a bunch of applications out, with the least amount of research on the organization, in the hopes someone will bite. So what kind of employee will they be?

Audition Guidelines

Please submit:

  • A current CV/resume that includes: Date of Birth, Height, Weight, Citizenship as well as training and experience (with dates)
  • A current headshot
  • A current image in first arabesque (leotard and tights) on pointe (half toe for men).

Video Guidelines:

  • Video submissions should be no longer than 5 minutes.
  • Videos should include a brief barre as well as center work highlighting extension, turns, and both petit and grand allegro. Ladies must be wearing pointe shoes for center work. All videos should be recent. The dancer’s  entire body should be seen, but not taken from so far away that the dancer’s face is not clearly visible. Costumes are discouraged, particularly romantic tutus or any thing that is going to cover the line of your legs.
  • You may also submit a contemporary audition and performance video. In the case of the performance video, please do not submit a montage of clips set to a background track. We want to see how you dance to music, not how an editor spliced a bunch of clips together.
  • You may supply links to online pages, but please link directly to the content requested. A general Link to a personal website will receive a negative response.

Please send all audition submissions to info@sandiegoballet.org submissions sent to any other email address will be processed as junk mail.
