Artistic Director Javier Velasco creates a birthday offering fit for a 100 year celebration. A choreographic bouquet, highlighting some of the museum’s most iconic works including one of its earliest acquisitions, the evocative MARIA AT LA GRANJA.
Director’s Notes:
Happy Birthday, SDMA! and thank you for a century of bringing the finest of visual art to our Southern California community. While the art term “perspective” means giving the illusion of depth, the term can also mean seeing all the relevant facts and information in a meaningful interrelationship. In other words, Stepping back and taking it all in. One of the pieces on this program, MARIA AT THE BEACH, is based off of one of SDMA’s earliest acquisitions, MARIA AT LA GRANJA. The painting is a lovely portrait, but there isn’t a lot of drama in it. So some drama had to be created. Additionally, a lot of the feelings for the movement came from the fluid and liquid brushstrokes of the painter. Also, the idea of being at the beach, which always brings, moments of self reflection and other worldliness. As the evening is a celebration I wanted the second piece to not just be a celebration of the museum, but San Diego itself. HOMEGROWN is an exuberant, energetic tribute to the San Diego the past. For those native southern Californians, who might remember the KGB Homegrown album, this piece of nostalgia will bring a smile to their faces. Come and join us as we dance to songs that elevate the wonders of Julian, Torrey Pines, Chula Vista, and your favorite San Diego neighborhoods in typical 70s style – Javier Velasco
