Boys Program

Taught by renowned teacher/coach Maxim Tchernychev

The San Diego Ballet offers a Boys’ Scholarship Dance Program as a way to make ballet accessible to boys in the greater San Diego region. The weekly class is an all-boy, tuition-free program, for ages 8-12. It is designed to enhance athletic skills, increase flexibility, build muscle strength and help develop coordination. Ballet teaches discipline and produces superior core strength and is the backbone of all other forms of dance. If the boys move on to take other classes in the ballet program, they will study alongside girls in classes, but their special needs are addressed by our faculty. They will learn partnering skills, which will be necessary for them to forge a career in dance. They will learn how to use their larger muscle groups to attain male technique, including jumps and turns specific to their gender. Participants in the program also enjoy performance opportunities, including an invitation to audition for San Diego Ballet’s “Nutcracker.” Our male students have played parts in this production year after year, learning theatrical and performance skills along with the athleticism ballet demands. Boys have fun being Soldiers, Mice, Ginger Snaps, and participating as mischievous boys in the Party Scene. Two boys having trained with Mr. Tchernychev went on to dance the lead role of Billy in the original cast of the Tony Award winning Broadway hit, Billy Elliot. Many have been accepted into prestigious summer dance training programs and have won numerous awards in the Youth American Grand Prix.
