Director’s Notes

San Diego Ballet has been blessed over the years to have fostered strong relationships with internationally known (yet locally based) musicians. In 2015, we began a collaboration with the renowned jazz saxophonist, Charles McPherson. Through a generous grant from the San Diego Foundation, the company was able to workshop and then present the world premiere of McPherson’s Sweet Synergy Suite. The piece brought afro-cuban jazz and be-bop together to create a scintillating backdrop for our dancers. In addition to remounting the piece, this year, Charles will be creating a new piece for the company, featuring strings! We are proud to formalize our relationship with Mr. McPherson as Composer in Residence at the San Diego Ballet.

We are also presenting last year’s Time Further Out. In 1961, the Dave Brubeck Quartet continued their exploration of unusual time signatures that began on their 1959 album Time Out, with the release of Time Further Out. This was one of the earliest jazz albums I was exposed to and have always wanted to use it as the basis of a piece. As we are renewing our commitment to jazz music as a viable accompaniment to contemporary ballet, this seems like a good time to do so.
